I'd talked about using Aeroshell on the List in the past, but I didn't
remember you already knew about it! Yes, usually once Aeroshell is used in a
car engine, one can't switch back to regular engine oil. You ***must*** use
the 50 weight high detergent version, code # OIL W 100, which means 50W high
detergent. In my '65 F-85 4-door, which ran on Aeroshell for 8 years, the
drastic overheating that hit her 330, use of 2 cans of Restore, and
switching to 20/50 Mobil One brought the rings back a second time from
oblivion, this time from extremely excessive heat. The rings are holding,
now, but I can't seem to find 20/50 Mobile One anywhere. It seemed to
disappear. I may try Rotella in her, since regular engine oil will now work
in her, again.
Be careful with Aeroshell. Since it's a reciprocating aircraft engine oil,
it has ***no*** zinc or phosphorous in it. Recip AC engines use silver
bearings with steel backing - no tri-metal or babbit. Zinc and phosphorous
will corrode silver, hence those 2 additives are not used in recip aviation
oil.
