Please stop blaming plymouth everytime. In case of Lx 3 alpha this is sddm issue, which does not support plymouth smooth transition, or imho do it in wrong way.
In case of 2014.1, blame Oracle for VirtualBox, where pressing ESC button does not drop to text console when plymouth is running.
