When I write quick and dirty scripts, I don't really recommend them as being suitable for any serious purpose. :-) But if you get stuck with patches and a tarball, you could use this script as a basis for applying the patches to the tarball. http://quenelle.org/unix/2009/solaris-patches-on-tarballs/ Since the tarball license prevents you from redistributing the modified tarball, you'd still want Sun-the-wholly-owned-subsidiary-of-Oracle to make an updated tarball available. --chris
