Hi Phil, I see 2 benefits in holding a real physical face 2 face developer event:
1) Technical: it gives the project teams who have technical dependencies to seat together and speak on white board functional diagrams, sequence flaw diagrams ( good and error cases), finalize the API interface. This can be organized in parallel sessions (may be 3-4 sessions depending on the need). 2) Community: Most developers in our community never had the opportunity to meet each other. We all know Human aspect is critical, and the relation between people is completely different after they meet. It creates trust and speed up the whole community. As we are at the inception of the ONAP, the sooner we do it, the better for the whole community. A 2-3 days gathering would help. One more point regarding both approach (physical and virtual). We should recognize it is extremely difficult for remote people on the phone to understand and see (on the white board) what is gong on. Furthermore, I feel bad asking people who are 15 hours ahead or behind the wake up at 2 or 3 am to attend a meeting. The list may not be fully correct, I will be happy to upload it (just needs to know what would be the ideal placement for it) and invite the community to respond and introduce all required modifications. The list will have to be extended once we approve more projects. (Please note that Integration and Documentation interfaces with all projects, but there is no need to build interface, just to coordinate.) My development experience tells me such a mission can’t be achieved by project calls only, or even project-to-project calls, but requires a dedicated meeting, the sooner the better. If there is critical mass that get together in the room, then those remote, and on the phone *never* get nearly as much out of it as those in the room. I would like to better understand what we would do at a group gathering, virtual or physical in late July.
