[Winona Online Democracy]
Once again I turn my minds eye to the private sector. In whose interest,
financial or otherwise, is it to have as many people connected as possible?
Is it the local merchant (imagine Christmas Shopping without leaving the
house...and next day delivery guaranteed)? Is it the local manufacturing
business (everyone spends too much time with personal e-mail and web
surfing! My company checked shortly after our e-mail system went
companywide and found only 13% was business related)? Is it the local
government (the school board, Public Works, etc. looking for support or
maybe just participation)? Perhaps the political parties would be
interested in 'exposing' the common man to their views and positions. Maybe
any number of United Way Agencies (Catholic Charities, Red Cross, YMCA,
etc.) would like to be benefactors in return for the everyday exposure it
would provide? And I haven't even suggested the local service providers
(who wouldn't provide an $800 computer for a lifetime customer?)
Whether you look to government, business, or charity the place to start is
with whomever has a tangible return on this sort of investment.
