[Winona Online Democracy]
Hello Craig and Winona Online Democracy,
The subject of teen employment is an important one, thanks for bringing it
up Craig.
As a High School teacher, I see both the good sides and bad sides to teen
employment.
I see kids sleeping in class because they work too much and I also see the
potential for better learning environments outside of the school walls.
I believe that once students have demonstrated a certain level of maturity
and responsibility, that by their High School years, they should spend more
time outside of the school than they they do inside school. Internships,
apprenticeships, and most real work place training are often far better
kinds of learning environments. I'm interested in the best kind of
learning for our childrend, no matter where it takes place. As a teacher,
I readily admit that the best kind of learning often (some would say,
always) takes place outside of the school walls.
There is much potential there if done right. I think we as a community
should put a lot more thought and planning into these topics to avoid a
pell mell mess of dead end jobs that leave us with tired young adults who
are already robbed of their mental and spiritual energy before they even
turn 20. With a little discussion, planning, and coordination, I think we
could help create programs that benefit our youth and our area employers.
Maybe the School District could look into pilot programs for these ideas?
Small one-on-one plans? Full blown pilot school? Something in-between?
What do students, parents, and area employers think? What do you see?
I'm interested in all view points but these groups seem to be some of the
best places to start.
Happy New Year to all,
:->

>Last year the Winona Youth Task Force spent considerable time
>discussing teen employment, the affect on school work, and the
>responsibilities of the employer as mentor. A recent study of the
>subject may be of interest -- The national study showed:
>
>"Over 40 percent of the nation's 16- to 17-year-old high school
>students held
>jobs during the school year. About 25 percent of those holding jobs
>worked
>20 hours or more per week. In general, higher family income, an
>absence of
>welfare history, and high levels of education are all associated with
>higher
>levels of teen employment. The findings reveal little negative
>association
>between school engagement and work. In fact, among the lowest income
>families, high work intensity goes along with more school engagement
>and
>better schoolwork performance."
>
>I remember concerns raised locally about how many hours teens worked
>and how late at night they worked. This study may raise some new
>thoughts. I think the lack of job applicants just makes it more
>important to be sure our community doesn't hurt it's future by
>overdoing teen work time at the cost of education and learning to be
>good citizens.
