[Winona Online Democracy]

Dwayne - I don't think I can adequately communicate all the dialogue
that took place on this topic at Winona Youth Task Force meetings any
more than I could summarize the discussions on this ListServ. I do
know that the primary contributors were Eric Sorensen - City Manager,
Ahmed El-Afandi - WSU Prof. and John Ruggerberg - WSH teacher. I
recollect two main themes -
1. Concerns about the long and very late work hours and the affect on
school and health. Also some concerns about a few employers who
didn't treat employees very well and recognition of those that did.
2. Also much time was spent on the concept of mentoring by employers
in the workplace and how beneficial that can be to the development of
our future citizens. Ahmed and Eric have had ideas and discussions
about this concept of employer mentoring for many years. Ahmed even
did a survey of businesses in town that showed support for the
concept.
Actually, mentoring is a good approach with any new employees. But,
for teens it is particularly important.
