[Winona Online Democracy] Greetings, I was asked to post the following press release announcing an event that grew out of the November-December discussion that took place on Winona Online Democracy regarding elections and voting. Those of you who are interested in this issue would probably find this event to be interesting to attend (see below). -Steve Kranz, Co-Chair -Winona Online Democracy News Release March 23, 2001 -------------------------------------------- Citizens interested in learning about different approaches to voting will be able to discuss with Patty Hurd, staff member of Fair Vote Minnesota, Thursday, March 29, 7 PM, at the Winona Senior Friendship Center. Her topic is: "Are There Better Ways to Vote: A discussion of election problems and some proposed solutions". Fair Vote Minnesota is a coalition of concerned citizens formed to educate voters throughout the state about the advantages of other ways of voting, especially proportional representation systems. Fair Vote Minnesota believes that adoption of a PR system could put an end to gerrymandering, and it may be the only way to provide disenfranchized citizens a chance to gain electoral representation. The meeting is an outgrowth of members of Winona Online Democracy. A second meeting will be held Tuesday, April 2, to discuss Winona County and Minnesota's Voting under current regulations. Cherie McClennan, Winona County auditor, and Mary Kiffmeyer, Secretary of State, will be speakers at the April 2 meeting. Time and place will be announced later. ---------------- This message was posted to the Winona Online Democracy Project. Please visit http://onlinedemocracy.winona.org to subscribe or unsubscribe.
