Maybe what I wrote was not clear. I'm not talking about using machine
translation to replace the NL websites. Where we have good human
translations we should keep them. But those websites are only a
small number of pages from the complete website and wiki. And they
only cover a relatively small number of languages.
With Google Translate integration we can support 100% of the website
and wiki. Every page. And then we can then support the following
languages:

As you can see this is far beyond what we have for current NL pages.
And far beyond what we can reasonably get to in the foreseeable future
with manual translation. (And remember we're talking about
translations of 100% of the website).
So the real question is: for a webpage where there is no existing
translation today, what is our preference:
A) Give the user an English page only?
or
B) Give the user easy access to the machine translated page, with a
mechanism for them to suggest improvements to the translation, and the
ability to have our editors help improve the translation as well?
What helps the user most?
(Another opportunity we have now is to accept contributions of general
webpages in languages other than English. We could then use the above
mechanism to translate into English, and improve the translations.)
