Mark,

It sounds as though your computer is trying to open your IM files in Writer.  
You need to open it in what ever software you use to use.  To do that instead 
of double clicking as you have done in the past, you will need to Right Click, 
chose "Open with...", go down the list of applications and choose the one you 
used to use and highlight it, then mark the box that says something like 
"Always use this application with this (type of) file, and then click the open 
button.  The next time you open the IM file it should open in that application 
and not OOO.  Also as Nookguy suggested clean up your system (this will take a 
long time if you haven't done it recently and regularly).

To developers of OOApache: perhaps it might be a good idea to not make the 
quick start option the default on the Windows version since it seems that 
several new users are running into is type of problem.
