That's a good idea. With the Hotmail Account, and its Windows Live ID, there is free use of SkyDrive which provides Word, Excel, and PowerPoint usage via browser. <https://skydrive.live.com> is a good place to set it up, after logging in with a Windows Live ID.
That might be a good way for Mark to read the Excel spreadsheet of concern. It can't be very complicated and I'm surprised the Amazon folks didn't know to suggest it. I'm also with Rob in his later comment. I don’t see how OpenOffice.org interferes with IM.
