That's a good idea.

With the Hotmail Account, and its Windows Live ID, there is free use of 
SkyDrive which provides Word, Excel, and PowerPoint usage via browser.  
<https://skydrive.live.com> is a good place to set it up, after logging in with 
a Windows Live ID.

That might be a good way for Mark to read the Excel spreadsheet of concern.  It 
can't be very complicated and I'm surprised the Amazon folks didn't know to 
suggest it.

I'm also with Rob in his later comment.  I don’t see how OpenOffice.org 
interferes with IM.  I have Skype and Windows Live Messenger in operation on my 
desktop all of the time and none of the OpenOffice.org-lineage software on my 
machine interferes with them at all.

I could point out that since the original poster has a hotmail
account, he should have access to
basic Word and Excel like Gmail users do.
