Maybe it's time to reopen the naming discussion. It's good to have a name if
you want publicity. I found http://glass.sf.net yesterday. It's not hardware
and it's not OpenGlass, but it may still be too close for comfort.

There are a few points of discussion:

- Do we keep the Raptor name TechSource uses for its other products?

Pros: We may get some cross-promotion between different TechSource cards,
although the target market for this product is rather different than that of
other TS products. The TechSource name itself will probably do that already,
as well. The people at TechSource may want it (which would of course be an
overriding concern).

Cons: It might make the wrong impression, and trigger "it sucks for gaming"
responses. Then there is the issue of how professional it sounds. In the
medical and ATC markets Raptor apparently works, but if we can get the name
to give a strong impression that this is a professional card for people who
get work done rather than the same thing you play games on, it would be a big
plus I think. Kind of like Opteron vs. Athlon and Xeon vs. P4.

- Political issues

A major issue from a developer point of view is that the specs of the card
will be open. That will be an important part of the market, since you need
the specs for Open Source operating systems and probably for the embedded
market. However, if we want this thing on a mainboard (perhaps instead of the
five year old ATI Rage XL on a board like
http://www.tyan.com/products/html/tomcatk8e.html) we'll probably be competing
on price and driver quality. The mainboard manufacturer will want something
that works on Windows at least, and we should be careful not to give too much
of a GNU hippy feel to it :-). We should also be careful to avoid making the
impression that the RTL will be freely available. So the openness should
probably be in there somewhere, but the "professionalism" criterium carries
at least as much weight.

Here are the names that are currently on the Wiki
(http://wiki.duskglow.com/index.php/OpenGraphics%20videocard%20naming). I
removed minor variations and grouped them a bit:

TS Raptor
TS Raptor OpenView
TS Raptor Transcension
TS Raptor OpenGraphics
TS Raptor OpenStealth
TS OpenRaptor
TS Raptor Freedom

Heart of Gold
Harbinger
ORC Harbinger
Lightbringer
TS Visionary
Freedom

Graphite
TS Glass
TS OpenGlass
TS Aventurine
TS Tiger's Eye
TS Zircon

OpenPower
TS OpenGraphics
TSOSGC01

Right now my vote would go to something from the bottom two groups. Although
TSOSGC01 is probably a bit too much :-).
