There's still a perceived need to have a "value add." It's STILL going to cost us money to produce this thing, and there's a risk that someone will use the IP and leave us in the dust. Of course, the community could buy us out, and then it wouldn't be an issue. :)
BTW, everything the community contributes goes under LGPL, and there will be plenty of it. Also, all IP for the initial prototype board will be LGPL. And it's still a bit early to make specific decisions about the rendering core.
