I assume by Xrand you mean XRANDR. But XRANDR is an X extension that
allows on-the-fly changing of your desktop resolution and orientation
(think: rotation). So I assume you mean XRENDER instead, which is an X
extension that offers more modern and more accelerated drawing
mechanisms.

I don't know if video playback using XRENDER is feasible and fast. If it
is, it might surpass XV as a video display method, but that won't happen
for some time I think. Hardware overlays with hardware scaling and
colorspace conversion (which is what is typically required for an XV
implementation) will be important for some time to come, so I feel OGA
should implement one. I don't think that's overly difficult btw; the
hardware will have to do colorspace conversion and scaling anyway.

And if the hardware is sufficiently flexible, using XRENDER to play
video will still be possible, should that become the dominant video
playback method.
