It seems to me a general trend, that the frontier
between hardware and software is being blurred.
(Was it ever razor sharp?)

Is there any possible interpretation of the GPL
that would shut out the other, non-GPL systems from
using GPL:ed hardware? Will it still be okay to make,
e.g. closed source drivers for GPL:ed hardware,
license-less (public domain) or BSD-like licensed
drivers?

Is there any relevance at all in asking how possible
firmware (runtime extension?) is affected?

(I suppose DRI can not be classified as runtime extension.)

What parts and uses will be affected?

Does the hard PCI bus interface, unquestionably,
contain/limit the GPL virality, even for more inventive
uses of the FPGAs?
