The problems solved by the external box are (1) more space for
connectors, and (2) moves the analog stuff away from the noisy
electronics in the PC.  It does not solve a PCB space issue, because
there probably isn't one.

For the economy model, we could, however, do something like what
you're asking, but there's the noise factor...
