Otherwise the different clocks will drift.I was assuming a master clock distributed to each box. (Via equal length cables, of course) The master clock module, and its octopus cable, could have a high markup, since only high-end applications would need it. The mic input box detects if a clock cable is plugged in, and switches from internal clock to master clock.
that's the BNC labeled 'word clock' that's on pro audio gear

wouldn't work even. most cases have a separator between 2 slots
} besides, you don't want analog inside the PC case Agreed, I'm just trying to hammer the use-a-slot idea deeper into the ground. :-)the required hardware to transform symetric to asymetric is your standard, simple yet effective op/amp connected in an "adder" configuration between the + and -the shield is connected to the power 0vI suppose someone sells little boxes that do this? Is an op-amp considered good enough for very high end audio these days?
depends
Would the mic input go straight into the ADC, or would there be some sort of preamp first? Some premium, la-dee-da hand-selected FET?
yes, you'd probably need that
I'm thinking it would be nice if the same PCB could be hooked up to either balanced or unbalanced inputs. Maybe add/delete a front-end component or two, and/or wire the input jack to different points on the board?
that's classic, just use a TS instead of a TRS jack the (-) connection is on the ring and gets grounded when using a TS jack
