Hello again
I see that after a small trip in audio and strorage it comes back to
graphics and my idea - LCD over Ethernet.
My updated requirements of the board are:
- LVDS port for TFT panel
(optional VGA/DVI for connecting a projector)
- Ethernet connection (Gbit+)
- FPGA capable of 2D/3D/video decoding
- maybe an ARM or Geode cpu
The advanced version could have an integrated 4 port ethernet switch, so
you can build a wall from these intelligent panels and connect all of
them using short patch cables. Actually the switch has to be L3, because
of mesh topology and redundant links.
The 4 port idea came from a plug and play feature - anytime you connect
one of these modules to your LAN, your X desktop will grow on the fly.
The 4 ports are marked with directions, so the new panel will appear on
the correct place, left/right/above/below..
(if the price matters, there can be only one ethernet port and four
ports for direction sensing - as wired i2c or wireless: IRDA)
The software part:
- capable of 2D desktop
- 3D mode with partial viewport (3D over multiple displays)
- video decoding:
- decoding of mpeg2/4 stream
- supporting effective wall mode
(each unit decodes the part of picture which is visible)
Also, it could have ATA/SATA ports to make a distributed storage and/or
USB for HID (mouse, kbd) and mass storage - to make a silent computer
(remember, the apps will run on a noisy server, far far away)
The final price of the solution (~mass production) should be on the same
level as today because there are parts which will just move (graphic
core), parts which are not required (dac/adc/transmitters/lcd driver
board) and newly required parts (ethernet phy, small cpu).
I think, nobody has a product like this:
.. need a larger desktop? buy our display, connect it, work ..
.. don't be limited by dualhead graphics - our displays: anywhere, any
count ..
.. reconfigurable wall from 4:3 to 16:9 (or anything else) ..
.. your wife needs a computer? - buy a display+hid and create a new x
session.. or lend her one of yours ..
.. the childs want to play multiplayer? dismount your 2x2 wall into 4
separate consoles and let them play ..
Daniel
