Neither.  You hook it up the first time to deal with the chicken/egg
problem.  Then you use the software tools to set up the default mode
in the PROM and X11 modeline.

It would seem a shame to spend $100 for something you use only once.
The funny thing is that people were complaining about paying a service
fee to have someone else do it who already has the necessary tools.
I'm sure the service fee would be less than $100.
