I changed it a few times, and didn't quite find a good formulation. This 
is a good suggestion though, and it was right under my nose.

You mean it doesn't look anti-aliased? It definitely is. Maybe your 
browser is scaling the image? Even GIMP itself uses low-quality scaling 
for display, and it may cause jagged edges. Or do you mean that you 
don't want antialiasing for printing, but rather just high resolution?
