The usual practice is, they use the trademarked name, with TM or (R) as appropriate, with a footnote saying that Foo is a trademark of Foobar Inc. Sometimes you will see a very generic footnote "Trademarks are owned by the companies that own them." type thing. The important thing is to not have the reader think that you are claiming someone else's trademark. These days, ads refer to competitor's products by name, and I doubt they get permission to say "Our product is better than Foo."
