I don't know about Icarus but it would be nice to use simulators to double check the logs. Moreother, VN-Check could check the Verilog code; Modelsim has source coverage built in and could provide usedful info about simulation coverage.

Hello,

I'd like to know whether you need to develop & test the FPGA using open-source tools or not? I know you'll need the vendor tool for synthesis and P&R. But, I
have access to professional tools like ModelSim, Cadence NC, Primetime,
VN-Check , source coverage using Modelsim etc...
I can provide feedback on the test, design etc... using these tools if there is
a need from you.
What do you think?

My simulator of choice is Icarus Verilog. It's free software, and the
head developer is very responsive and helpful. (If only Ubuntu
developers would be quicker about grabbing updates.)

I don't know how Icarus performs compared to the "professional" tools,
but I've used it to simulate a rather large design, and subjectively,
it seemed to be very fast.
