Apologies for the off-topic post but this appears to be a genuine
vendor-supported effort at producing Free Software to control a mobile
handset.
Opengraphics mailing list readers may be interested in a project called
OpenMoko (http://www.openmoko.com), for a GSM handset controlled by open
source, Linux-based software being built by First International Computer
(http://www.fic.com.tw). The mailing list is also available on
news.gmane.org as gmane.comp.hardware.openmoko.general
