Re Jason E's suggestion:

I now have two clients on different PCs

On [email protected] (locale en-UK) all searches fail

On [email protected] (locale en-US) all searches I've tried so far 
(record ID, author, title) work.

I'd be interested in any thoughts on how to fix the locale issue.
