I'll have to look into it, but realize there are a lot of restrictions in place with GAE that are being worked around by Vince et al, so I'll have to see how this all affects the functionality of the admin console. My first guess without seeing the error you're seeing is that it's related to the write restrictions on the file system and I'll need to rework the code in the admin console to take that into account. I'll try to take a look tomorrow or over the weekend.
