He mentioned he was using the installer. The installer sets up it's own instance of the JDK 1.6 specifically for use with OpenBD. (that's why the installers are fairly large - because they come with the JDK). I did that so that the problem you're suspecting wouldn't happen. ;)
The "openbd_ctl" script creates a sub-shell that resets the JAVA_HOME, etc variables before it launches OpenBD. However, I do suppose it's worth a double-check. The "system properties" area in the OpenBD Administrator is an easy place to check this.
