Heh. Well it *was* an allusion to the wee gold stars we got at school (same in NZ as in USA, it seems), but I didn't mean it in a condescending way: I meant it at face value... I was a bit of a swot @ primary school, and I *liked* getting my gold stars! I was thinking of awarding him a chocolate fish instead of a gold star, but I think that would be well and truly lost on anyone outside of NZ.
