this is all very strange, or you editing at the wrong place:
since if you had before 53something as port and now 3306 ands the same error message - this shouldn't happend, since your mysqld will run only on port i think... since this is actually the mysql-error message - so the connect has worked before - even with the wrong port and this is somewhat strange...
whats written in your config.xml file? since you changed directly in dbi.conf right?
please try to set the parameters in config.xml and rerun ./configure_etc.sh and then
try again...
whats written in log/stderr.log?
