Sorry, I don't know much about OpenSSL. At first I tried to use the
latest 0.9.8 version as well but couldn't get it to work (can't remember
the exact error but it was different to the one above).

Then I tried a version that was not too far away from the one CentOS
installs.

I still have problems on the CA interface. The signature of an approved
CSR isn't reconginzed for some reason and I can't use the batch
processor. I think that's related to OpenSSL as well. But you'll hear
more about that soon on the mailinglist I'm afraid :-)

I don't know whether that makes any difference, but did you compile the
perl modules via CPAN or install it via apt-get? Maybe one of the
modules uses your old openssl-dev package. But that's just a shot in the
dark.
