I've been lurking here for a while, and found a note about OpenXPKI. All my googling previously had not turned up OpenXPKI. So, my questions:Is OpenCA actively under development?
Definitely yes, although admin issues have had me working towards the
establishment
of a devel environment. We are finally finalizing an agreement with a major
OS provider to get some support for the new projects.
We are starting to work on several new aspects for the OpenCA-NG, which will
include many new features and that will be, for most part, updated and
re-designed.
The first code to be available it will be the libPKI library that is meant to
help
developers to integrate PKI usability inside applications, more info and some
initial code is available at:
http://www.openca.org/projects/libpki
Actually the library will use OpenSSL (or KMF) as a crypto provider to guarantee
the best portability among different OSes. This library will be extensively used
by OpenCA to ease development of applications.
Is OpenXPKI actively under development?
OpenXPKI is a spin-off of OpenCA. It has no other connection with OpenCA if not using our code base, anyhow it is a completely new project. You should ask its developers for more details about it.
OpenXPKI appears to be a fork of OpenCA. Why? What was the goal of the fork?
Some former contributors to the project wanted to have more control over the project management besides the code therefore they decided to start their new project. An healthy competition, after all! And besides, one of the OpenCA project goal was to provide the possibility for everybody to use it and customize for their own purposes :D
Do OpenXPKI and OpenCA aim at the same goals?
Really, I do not know.
Is either one mature enough to begin attempting to use?
OpenCA has been used in many environments at research and company levels. It is
quite stable although it has some limitations we want to overcome with the new
design --- look at the OpenCA-NG project (OpenCA Next Generation) at:
http://www.openca.org/projects/ng/
And finally, for either one:Is there documentation (other than what I mentioned above) on how to design, setup, and use either product?
I am trying to fix the problem with the documentation about the images which,
for some reasons are missing from the uploaded version.
Cheers,
