The GSM SIM card is a microprocessor card. GSM card specs can now be
downloaded free of charge from ETSI, but they do ask you to register with
them. When I last tried their site (March), the way in (but it might have
changed again) was:
http://www.etsi.fr (french), www.etsi.org (english). To search for GSM
documents, use www.etsi.org/key, and the ETSI publications catalogue is at
http://webapp.etsi.org/pda/. But the search engines require you to know
exactly what document or class of documents you want: "GSM 11.11" for specs
related to 5Volt cards works, but "11-11" doesnt, and nor does "5V AND
cards".
There are several versions of each spec, because they keep on updating them
- but the basic info is in all versions of GSM 11.11.
