Thanks to Greg, the problem appears to be solved! My sgi compiler
license was about to expire and was spitting out anoying reminder
messages. Configure performs test compiles and assumes that
any resulting output is an error condition and so became very
confused. It seems that /lib/cpp works fine now, no need for
cc -E. I've certainly learned more about autoconf than I ever cared to.
Also, there seems to have been a minor hangup during make install
due to confusion over an existing "install" script. I fixed it by changing my
path appropriately (I think). I'll try to reproduce it next time I compile.
Anyhow, OpenDX comes up just fine.

  Thanks all for your help!
