Okay, that explains a lot more. It appears that your java server is not able to use DXLink to start up a DX Executive. Do you have the dx script in the path of the user that is starting up the java server? That is where I would start looking.

That would also explain why you don't get the interactors since there is no server running.

Here's the Java console output (Netscape 4.79 for IRIX) when the
ScatterData.html page loads. All the widgets are disabled and I get:

Netscape Communications Corporation -- Java 1.1.5
   Type '?' for options.
IBM Visualization Data Explorer / Java Explorer version 2.0.0

and after 30 seconds of startserver/java 100% CPU:

Error: Unable to start Data Explorer

If I reenter the page, the last line repeats immediately even through the
CPU again maxes for 30 seconds.

If I don't startserver, I instead see:

Netscape Communications Corporation -- Java 1.1.5
   Type '?' for options.
   DXClient: Couldn't get I/O for
IBM Visualization Data Explorer / Java Explorer version 2.0.0
