Do you have TCP/IP installed.  If you could get DX started
then it is most likely your X-server problem.
The OpenDx 4.0.6 for Windows works fine with Exceed 6.x, Sun's PC-Xware,
NetManage UnixLink.  I do not know anything about Exceed 5.x.
Is Exceed 5.x X11R6 compliant?  If not then that may be the cause of your
problems.

The long delay and/or pause should not happen.
