Sorry if the points I brought up were not what you were most interested
in.  As I am new to DX, all I can currently do is to go through samples
and playing with the various options.  Of the many samples I tinkered with
I ran into no core dumps, seg faults, or even warnings, other than the gif
issue.  I'm aware that you applied the patch and the many warnings it
originally gave, but it appears as if everything is happily coexisting.

I'm hoping to switch over from using IDL to using Data Explorer for
visualization but, as with most things, this takes time.  So, it is quite
likely that in the future I will be able to offer more help.
