Rob,

I guess you're right.  I commented out the env. variables and loged in
again and sure enough when I ran samples, it still pointed me to the right
place.  As I recall, when I first install dx and ran the samples it also
looked to my home directory.  So I just used the file prompter to get me
to the samples and worked from there.  If I recall correctly if I just
chose the file it would not go to the right place when I chose another
sample.  But if I adjusted the filter (i.e. path) it did on the second
try.  I guess I don't know what to say; when I press the samples button it
opens a file selector pointing at 

/usr/local/dx/samples/programs/*.net
