Steve, I can't answer your question, but I do have a suggestion. I have found that the data explorer native file format is quite flexible. If you know what the file format is for "fieldview files" then you should be able to write out an additional header file to tell dx how to get the data directly from these files rather than using a converter and making a separate copy of the files (which at least in my case can be quite big).
For a description and examples of the native file format header section download the dx documentation in pdf format and look at appendix B of the users guide.
