Exceed cannot be downloaded.  You can get a 60 day Trial version of CD from
http://www.hummingbird.com or http://www.unipress.com.
The Trial version is available only to Industrial users.  They do not
provide
Trial version to academic users, as I read at unipress URL.

You can get any X-server.  Most should work

There are 2 different version of DX for Windows, one uses Cygwin and other
NOT.
Some users like parsng scripts etc to DX like they do on a UNIX workstation
therefore Cygwin compiled binaries were provided for those users... others
prefer no unix emulation therefore for them Exceed compiled version...
