Looking back through the dev mailing list, I found where I had located the problem. See <http://opendx.npaci.edu/mail/opendx-dev/2000.02/msg00098.html>. It was a problem with the trunc function not working correctly. You may try and write a small program to see if it works for you with the compiler flags that are being set when you compile dx.

Actually this is a bug with your install. It was seen in version 4.0.6 of
the code but not by 4.1.0. Which version are you using. If you search the
dev mailing list for step, you should find the mails describing what the
problem was. (I fixed it, but I don't remember what exactly the problem
 was.)

 dx -version yields:

Open Visualization Data Explorer Executive, version 04.1.0000
(19:03:26, Jul 29 2000)

Open Visualization Data Explorer User Interface, version 04.01.0000
19:04:40, Jul 29 2000)

Open Visualization Data Explorer Script, 04.1.0000

I have this program from SuSE-Linux 7.0, package "dx" in series "gra".

 ldd /opt/dx/bin/dx yields:
        not a dynamic executable
