It's my understanding that Mesa is capable of doing hardware acceleration if
1) hardware it understands is available and 2) it's configured correctly.
However, I have not yet figured out how to actually make this happen or test the
system to see if this is happening. Certainly if the hardware is not available
then Mesa can do its thing in the CPU at a slower speed making it possible to
take advantage of packages that use Mesa/OpenGL without the hardware.
There is quite a lot of information at: http://www.mesa3d.org/, including a
list of video chip sets that Mesa is supposed to take advantage of. However,
while compiling/installing Mesa is straight forward, and it comes already
compiled with many linux distributions, I have not found any simple
tools/methods
for seeing what it is actually doing. Any advice/sites on actually
using/testing
Mesa would be of use - especially for those of us who get to administer OpenDX.
