Not trying to push any particular brand, but.
I had tremendous success getting the Nvidia OpenGL
working under Linux and it was definitely hardware
accelerated. 
All you need is the card, the Xfree86 binaries and
the Nvidia drivers. 

For this scenario, I would definitely cater to the
dependencies of Nvidia's drivers. For example,
I wouldn't use any kernel versions lower than
the recommended.
