I'm annoyed because:

1. I'm pretty sure this should work
2. I think I solved it long ago and have forgotten how
3. I've wasted a bunch of time today and got nowhere.

I just want to output a "tab" character via System as part of a spreadsheet-like output, ex.:

"echo \"%fTAB%f >> somefilename\""

(the escaped quotes are necessary so they survive to the shell command)

Assume I've constructed the string in Format, but I've tried typing it directly into System with no better luck (using actual values in place of %f of course).

I've tried
\t
\\t
\^I (parse error!)
\^\I
typing the TAB key (nope: moves to another field in the UI)
\011 (octal)
then getting really hopeless (hey, it's a vi thing)
^V^I
\^V\^I
and variants

nada: no tabs and in many cases, not even the second float.

Ideas anyone? Is it impossible, whoever wrote the parser?

Thanks.
