Richard,

I did some testing this week with our version of OpenDX 4.1.3. It appears that there is something amiss with WinaXe's hardware rendering. Of course Exceed 3D has no problems with our version, and I just got through testing X-Win32 5.2.2. X-Win32 could do the hardware rendering without the segmentation fault seen in WinaXe; however, they still have some bugs to work out (which I've been told will be done by the next 5.3 revision). Since I can produce good results with both Exceed and XWin32, I would have to conclude that WinaXe's hardware rendering does not work. I performed this testing on a Windows 2000 box with an Nvidia card.

Still testing the hardware rendering option of the OpenDX 413 Windows version
with WindowsXP and an Nvidia Geforce2 graphic card.

I do not know the WinaXe Xserver you refer to but I suspect that the error
you have is caused by this being a non OpenGL compatible Xserver. Unless
the Xserver support OpenGL rendering in hardware, you will always receive
 this message.

The response of the WinaXe support is that the desktop color depth and the X
server color depth should be EXACTLY the same in order to use hardware
rendering with GLX extensions activated.

WinaXe color depth can be set to 8, 16 or 24 bits or to "auto" . If it is set
to "auto" it is adapted to the desktop dcolor depth but with a maximum of 24
bits. But my PC allows a choice only between 16 bits and 32 bits colors
(resriction due to Windows XP or to my graphic card ?).

So the only possible choice for color depth compatibility would be 16 bits,
but in this case OpenDX does not give acces to the menu for switching between
hardware and software. Sigh...

The recent versions (5.21 and above) of the Starnet Xserver X_win support
hardware rendering of opengl. They have a 2hour limited demo version on
 their web site (http://www.starnet.com/).

I made a new test with the last version of X-Win32 from Starnet. In the
settings I found only a choice for PseudoColor mode that I set to off and I
kept my desktop in 32 bits colors. I set also GLX buffering on. Hardware
rendering fails again. Here is the response of the Starnet support :

OPenDX is actually on OpenDX itself, according to OpenDX
developer I talked to awhile back. You might want to contact
them for the solution.

So who is right? Is it an OpenDX problem, an X-server problem, or a
compatiblity problem between desktop color depth and X server color depth?
Any suggestion would be welcome.

Best regards
