Since you are using hardware rendering, you'll really want to update to 4.2. Randall Hopper added a whole bunch of code for lighting and two-sided polygons, etc. in the upgrade.

Using the default lights, the output from Slab is lit from the wrong side. Adding 4 directional lights pointing in +/- X and +/- Z helps. Putting in an ambient light, at any brightness, seems to make no difference.

I use only hardware rendering on a Dell Pentium 4 with an Nvidia card.

I suspect the Slab module generates polygons poorly. As a test, I ran its output through Isolate and everything began to look right. Isolate must generate polygons on its own and gets it right.

Thanks for your help. Any reports of problems with Slab?

Are you changing the direction of the light? We use lights all the time.
Is this with hardware or software rendering?

Do lights work? I have a simple drawing produced by 3 instances of
Slab that is only lit from one side; the other side is always black.
Adding Light, AmbientLight, and using Options to set the ambient and
diffuse light levels makes virtually no difference. Adding
FaceNormals makes no difference. I am using Version 4.1.3 with
Redhat Linux.
