You should be able to set your memory setting to 255 without a
problem. In order to use it from the start menu, you can create
yourself a new Shortcut to dx and add the -memory command line option
in the shortcut settings.

It is working. - 6:30 PM 10/26/2002. I was just now able to open and show a
visualization on the screen.
I really appreciate all of the suggestions that have been made.
I had a long email with additional things I have tried but the short version
with many steps left out is:
1. Downloaded and installed updated Cygwin and Xfree86.
2. Installed OpenDx 4.2 Windows version in Cygwin file structure.
3. Opened OpenDx 4.2 Windows version with command line in the Cygwin bash
shell and put the suggested -memory 20 command line parameter. That is what
did it.
It still does not work like it did before. If I try to open OpenDx with the
Windows Start menu or the Cygwin bash shell without the -memory 20 parameter
it still goes through the same sequence exactly and gives the same errors.
Is -memory 20 the optimum setting? Are there others I should try until I
reach some limit and it no longer works?
Is there something I can do so that I can open OpenDx from the Start menu or
should I just be satisfied with the fact that it works?
Thanks,
Frankie
