On a rendered surface I will often superimpose the mesh (showgrid) in
white with a small opacity value (with a unit value the mesh is too
visually detracting from the data-colored surface).  The works great
with software rendering, but with hardware rendering the mesh is not
shown at all with an opacity value less than 1.  Is this another
case of a shortcoming in hardware OpenGL rendering?
