Import understands how to read arrays from a basic netCDF. However,
attribute conventions in netCDF are typically utilized as metadata to
establish context such as the relationship between data and coordinate
systems, which is necessary for many types of data. The documentation
discussions these issues. In addition, some users have contributed tools
to convert netCDFs that may have such information into a form that DX can
operate on directly. They were discussed in this mail group only a few
days ago.
