FWIW...
I spent ages trying to get decent looking animations out of ImageMagick. The formats that promised the best quality were unsupported by any player at my disposal, or there was a corresponding bug in ImageMagick.
For example, the '-quality' switch (for mpeg output) messed things up or didn't work. The default parameter for this switch is '75' (meaning 75% of best quality), and the resulting mpegs were horribly aliased. No other values of this parameter were helpful.
I ended up using 'mng' format. This is supposed to be the successor to gif. It is as lossless as gif, but with much more compression. You can play the files with IrfanView or MNGSV -- both free. The resulting animations look great.
The following command produces an animated Multiple Network Graphics file with a 50 ms (i.e. 5.0 cs) delay between frames:
(N.B. I am using Win98 on a P3, 512 Mb).
