I spent ages trying to get decent looking animations out of ImageMagick. The formats that promised the best quality were unsupported by any player at my disposal, or there was a corresponding bug in ImageMagick.
You can have DX to record your animation to a MIFF file; use ImageMagick to write each frame from the MIFF file to a PPM file; and then try something like
cat * | ppmtoy4m | mpeg2enc -o mymovie.mpg -b 5000 -f 3 -r 32 --no-constraints
to make the MPEG 2 movie. This has worked well for us in the past and made several of the movies that we've shown at our booth at Supercomputing. I think for Fedora Core 1 mpeg2enc needs a patch; I'll know Monday. Let me know if you have a problem with this.
