The XEN system requires HVM for Windows. Vmware server doesn't work on MAC AFAIK, and ACE is still in beta. Copy your VM image anywhere and run it? Sure why not? Openfiler has a Xen image. Sure without HVM it might be difficult in some situation, but given almost all new hardware has HVM, that is a bit of a white elephant. Acting as a file server doesn't seem like a big load. That's why I think
the openfiler might make a good host platform. And if the guests have small boot/system partitions with the bulk of their space attached via iscsi they could easily be moved elsewhere later if necessary.
I think that is the point. It is better in that situation to run OF in a domain. Consider when you might want to run OF in the host domain for iSCSI just one computer there is not additional benefit. Direct disk access is better. If you want iSCSI for DR, then you should OF separately on another box. It is likely then that OF will be used for CIFS and NFS. As I stated previously it is better to do this in a guest domain. Management easy is better when applicances are in guest domains. When you confuse this, it will become a PITA. This is the key point of virtualisation. Missing this, is missing the point. If you really need large loads, then virtualisation might not be the best option anyway. I've seen an assortment of problems mentioned on the Centos list
recently related to xen kernels - often by people who weren't even running guests. I'm not convinced it is ready for prime time yet. Have you kept your kernels up to date with no problems from the updates or are you sticking with something old and stable?
Can't comment on Centos, I don't use it as a host domain. I usually compile my own kernels. The distribution packaged xenified kernels are relatively new. Haven't really tested any yet. I have tested XenEnterprise (which is based on 3.0.4) for Windows, and it works well. I'm going to being doing some testing with a W2k3 server over the next couple months with XE 3.2. I think it is unfair to characterise Xen as not working now. Many people are using it, just because you aren't or can't means that using FUD is not polite. Nicholas
